MTA Wants Pregnant Women to Wear 'Baby On Board' Buttons quoting : "elle"

The MTA has come up with a novel way to encourage straphangers to give up their seats to pregnant riders. "Pregnant riders, seniors and those with disabilities often need seats more than others but their condition may not always be visible," said MTA Interim Executive Director Ronnie Hakim. The MTA is distributing buttons that say "Baby on Board!" Many pregnant women have complained that straphangers don't offer them seats. Pregnant woman now have a new tool to help them get a seat on the subway.

The MTA is now giving out buttons for people to wear signaling that they need a seat, whether it's because they're pregnant, elderly, or disabled. But generally, riders know which customers need seats. Then again, if buttons are good enough for Kate Middleton, they're good enough for us. "While riders are required to relinquish seats in those areas under federal regulations and MTA rules of conduct, the new courtesy buttons can help riders better identify which customers need seats," writes the MTA, which is not requiring documentation to receive a button.
