"bcexcelsior" : Addressing Underrepresentation in New York City’s Educators – the EXCELSIOR

A considerable amount of research has been done on Cultural Responsive Teaching, and its benefits as a teaching method are clear. The Young Men's Initiative was tasked with "addressing disparities faced by Black and Latino young men in New York City across the areas of education, employment, health, and justice," according to the City of New York's website. This program serves as the city's response and hopeful solution to its lingering problem of underrepresentation. According to Brathwaite, the NYCMT is available on most City University of New York (CUNY) colleges. Its main goal is to recruit and support 1,000 students to become future NYC educators until its expiration in 2018.

James Merriman, CEO of the New York City Charter School Center, said decisions about whether to renew charter schools are often complex, especially when the evidence of success is mixed. Still, its renewal application does not emphasize academic growth in its middle school grades. They also did not approve its proposal to exclusively serve students with disabilities. "Opportunity Charter School was given clear performance benchmarks over the last five years, and the middle school grades did not meet them," education department spokesman Michael Aciman said in an email. But he thinks the middle school should stay open.
