Departing guests mourn Waldorf Astoria as it closes for makeover
The Waldorf Astoria's lobby decor, its facade and its grand ballroom are all off-limits to renovators. Hearn's great-aunt Mickey Vaughn, a gospel musician, sat Tuesday night at the grand piano once played by composer Cole Porter. It was checkout time Wednesday at the venerable Waldorf Astoria. (James Keivom/New York Daily News)"It's stepping back in time when you walk in there," said departing guest Chelsey Hearn, 28, of Tyler, Tex. "They just like knowing the history of the hotel, enjoying the architecture and the furniture," said Hearn.

The final guests — Erik and Claes Lindbom 30-year-old twin brothers from Sweden — checked out at 2 p.m., with Erik clutching the gift shop's last Waldorf Teddy Bear. "I've met the poor, the rich, princesses, presidents, [Navy] seals, the prince of Saudi Arabia," he enthused. After 86 years hosting presidents, princesses and pop stars, The Waldorf-Astoria hotel closed its gilded doors Wednesday, its glittery guests making way for two years of construction workers. Elizabeth Taylor, for whom a suite is named, took at least one husband honeymooning at the hotel. "He shook my hand and said, 'Let me take care of my man,'" remembered doorman Frank Kusi, 47.
